Lower Your Voice: Nathan Lee Laid Off For "Economic Reasons"

Word just into Reeler HQ confirms that interim Village Voice film editor Allison Benedikt is no longer "interim" -- she has indeed accepted the position full-time. As editor, Benedikt will oversee estimable Voice critics J. Hoberman and Nathan Lee as well as the content syndicated among the 17 newspapers in the Village Voice Media/New Times chain.
"Obviously there's been turmoil at the Voice, and I very much understand how difficult this has been both for the local film community and Voice staffers and readers," Benedikt wrote this morning in an e-mail correspondence with The Reeler. "But with change comes opportunity (or at least that's what I've heard), and I know that Jim, Nathan and I care deeply about making the Voice's film section as smart as it ever was, while also putting our own stamp on the coverage. First order of business: All celebrity interviews all the time. Stay tuned."
Oh, wow -- huge sigh of relief. Anyhow, congrats to Benedikt and best of luck to her, Hoberman and Lee in putting the last two months' turbulence behind them -- it wasn't fun while it lasted.
