Screening Gotham: All-Positive Friday!

True or false?

As per tradition, some of today's more upbeat movie news of note from around New York:

--Thanks to Anthony Kaufman for the tip to Zoom, the new NY Times blog featuring Errol Morris commenting on photography. Let me repeat that: The NY Times now publishes a blog featuring Errol Morris commenting on photography. I wonder how that pitch session went: "Hi, this is Errol Morris. Can I write a blog about pictures?" "Hmmm... perhaps. Like what, specifically?" "Like what makes a picture of the Lusitania true or false." "Oh, that. Sure, Errol. Here's your password."

--The Gotham Awards are moving this year from Chelsea Piers to Steiner Studios, where IFP will celebrate Mira Nair, Javier Bardem and IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring with special honors. Nominations will be announced Oct. 22; buy your tables now for prime Best Feature consideration.

--If you haven't yet snagged tickets to Sunday's Lincoln Center double feature of Tough Guys Don't Dance and Maidstone -- with director Norman Mailer in conversation with Kent Jones between the two -- it might be worth considering the rush line sometime this afternoon. Meanwhile, A.O. Scott has a terrific look at the Mailer program launching next week and Lou Lumenick goes way, way back to '87, when he "interviewed Mr. Mailer at length -- that is, he never stopped talking, even when tape and time ran out." Oh, the good old days. Let's pray for a revival on Sunday -- check back here for more on Monday.

--Finally, a quick shout-out to Onion AV Clubber Scott Tobias, whose new feature Glorious Miscellany doubles the week-ending good news you've come to expect from All-Positive Friday! Join us, film and culture bloggers, in eschewing bullshit! At least until Saturday.
